Double Bay School is built on land that was formerly nurseryland owned by Michael Guilfoyle. In 1875 Michael transferred "The Royal Exotic Nursery" to Leichhardt, bought land fronting William and Ocean Streets and divided it into building lots. Most of this land was purchased by the Education Department for Double Bay School.
One of Rugby League's greatest players, "Dally" Messenger, first played football at Double Bay Public School. He went on to play Rugby Union for Warrigals and joined Easts in 1905.
